Innovation and Cartoons

Tom Fishburne, who draws a funny and insightful cartoon called Brandcamp gave a speech entitled “Everything I needed to know about innovation, I learned from drawing cartoons.”

The talk focuses on the fun, creative, idea generating part of innovation. Fishburne suggests that innovation is a muscle – with more use we get better at it, without use it atrophies. He also suggests that the best way to be creative is to be interested in the world around us, and the best way to be interested in the world around you is to be interesting. But the list of how to be interesting “write about a piece of visual art once a month, read a magazine you’ve never read before, make something” sound to me like being interested. Just a nice virtuous circle.

Here’s his speech – and you can see the slides, laced with his cartoons are on his blog.

And here’s the full “how to be interesting list”, I’d add try a new experience and write or draw it.

It’s a good list- a reminder to use that “creative muscle”.
